gacha revenue tracker website.
But their story goes way beyond meme profit for the company, since between a lack of transparency, lies by the developers and no quality-of-life updates, the game died in its first year without even giving proper explanations on social media.
And now, as if nothing happened, they are trying to release a new version. So today we’ll go over the history of Higan and why you should not touch games like this even with a 10-foot pole.
The game was initially soft launched on February 23, 2023, including only Malaysia, Canada and Singapore, which made players unwilling to try the game on full release since most people dislike that type of launch.
This, paired with most soft launches not resetting servers, means players in the rest of the world will always be behind on full release instead of having an equal playing field, making this type of launch strategy something disliked by a big portion of the gacha community.
The last problem in the release of Higan Eruthyll had been the actual date the rest of the players would be able to download the game, April 6th.
You might be thinking, what’s the issue with this date? Well, another game by a small indie developer was releasing on April 26, Honkai Star Rail.
This made the comparison between both games inevitable and a lot of people decided to not even bother playing Higan considering the initial reviews had a lot of complaints.
And to understand all those complaints, we have to go back to a simpler time in gacha games, because around 2023 it’s when combat power penalties started becoming popular in gachas instead of the stamina system and developers started using it more often compared to other alternatives.
Like anything quote on quote “new”, people didn’t like this system because of how punishing it can be to play under big differences in combat power, but nowadays is the preferred method for auto battlers and idle games, including NIKKE, Lost Sword, STARSEED and many more.
The biggest issue this penalty had in Higan specifically was how huge the gap was. If your combat power was just 2% lower compared to the enemy team, your stats were reduced by around 25% making it impossible to progress.
The best part? This penalty applied also to PVP, making any sort of strategy useless outside “higher combat power always wins”.
Player fatigue was also increased because the stamina cost of running most game modes to level up your characters or farm resources, requiring you to either spend money from the get-go or you would be stuck for weeks running the same stages with how little resources you got back.
To combat all those issues, the developers were extremely generous during the launch showering the players with in-game mail rewards constantly, but after the honeymoon phase even those rewards stopped, making most players hit constant walls, not getting enough resources and barely able to pull for new characters.
And to talk about the last problem attached to the release of Higan, I’m going to give credit where credit is due; limited unit reruns.
If we talk about a current popular gacha like Girl’s Frontline 2: Exilium, a lot of players will praise the constant rerun of limited characters alongside new units so you have the opportunity of filling your Pokédex and not wait YEARS for a rerun like other games do (Genshin Impact).
But when it came to Higan Eruthyll, these reruns were a big drama that only added more fuel to all the previous problems, causing most players to drop the game a few weeks into release to play Honkai Star Rail instead.
After all those initial problems, the game continued running for a year without much going on for it. Small community, updates were far an in between and for the most part they became the meme of the gacha community for surviving with barely “any” profit.
Something to note that I personally LOVE is the first anniversary promotion, which only proved even further that they did not care in the slightest for the global community.
Look at this anniversary promotion. Comic Sans. Absolute chad, whoever is running the social media accounts for Higan, I love you.
Memes aside, around this time they also started talking about a “reboot” and how they still want to give players a new experience.
To show players that the game was not abandoned, they made a twitter thread going all the changes, new skins looking REALLY good and quality of life updates, but… this was posted in October 2024. That was their last post.
No updates, no tweets, no information.
In fact, the only updates you can find about this is the actual release of this reboot in BiliBili, which as far as I know, you can’t even keep your account and gotta start over again.
I’m not sure if they sold the IP to another company, or it’s the same, but CN published this version in December 2024, two months after the last post in their English social media accounts.
Having to start over in the same game after spending thousands of dollars is nothing but, in my opinion, a scam.
This game shares a lot of similarities with Cat Fantasy and Illusion Connect, both IPs that have rebooted constantly only to keep closing down their servers and making all players lose their accounts.
The publisher for this new version is Bilibili, which… can be considered a curse or a blessing, depending on how you look at it.
They don’t care about the games they publish, it’s only a way of bringing more attention to their main platform.
This means they don’t usually change monetization and let the developer handle most of the updates, but also means they don’t care if the game is never updated or the company is mishandling the IP. We’ve seen this already with Higan, Artery Gear and Jujutsu Kaisen Phantom Parade.
All in all, I just can’t recommend games that have proved time and time again the only thing they care is making some quick cash and ignore their players feedback.
We’ll see how long this new version of Higan gets updated for.
